Animal Science PhD Fellowship Available @ University Of Copenhagen Denmark

In resent years veterinarians, pig advisers and pig producers in Denmark have observed an increase in the incidence of gastric ulcers in growing pigs. Gastric ulcers may occur soon after weaning. There is almost no scientific knowledge on prevention of gastric ulcers in weaners, or the possible effects on stomach health in the subsequent stages. Current knowledge on this subject relates primarily to finishers and sows. The general recommendation to abate gastric ulcers includes coarsely grinding the feed, which results in poor feed conversion rate and thereby negatively affects production costs. Further knowledge to be included in on-farm prevention strategies is needed to improve productivity, health and welfare of the growing pig.

Project description

The objective of this project is to identify distinctive features in the individual pig, which predisposes to gastric ulcers after weaning. Moreover, the objective is to determine if feeding strategy and animal behaviour is related to the risk for weaners to develop gastric ulcers.
