Applied Vegetation Ecology Professorship Position @ Freiburg University Germany

This professorship will represent the fields of applied vegetation ecology in research and teaching. In research, the focus shall be on linking site characteristics and (forest) inventory data to further our understanding of the dynamic local processes resulting from climate and land-use change. This includes quantitative analyses and modelling of changes in site factors in space and time. Ideally, this will combine quantitative, experimental approaches in the field with analyses and modelling. Based on dynamic site/species models, approaches to assess the site suitability of tree species and land use options shall be developed. Research may further encompass vegetation dynamics influenced by disturbances, eutrophication or introduced species. Cooperations with the professorships at the Institute of Forest Sciences, the Institute of Earth- and Environmental Sciences, as well as with the Chair of Geobotany (Faculty of Biology) are strongly encouraged.

The focus of teaching will be on plant ecology and taxonomy as well as vegetation dynamics. Particular emphasis will be placed on practical teaching in the field. This includes the identification of plant species, their site requirements and use as ecological indicators, and the mapping of biotopes.

The majority of courses (modules) will be in the BSc programmes:

  • Waldwirtschaft und Umwelt
  • and Umweltnaturwissenschaften

and the MSc programmes

  • Forest Sciences
  • Environmental Sciences

Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.
