The Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Veterinary Medicine for a doctoral scholarship holder in the area of Applied Veterinary Morphology

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Veterinary Sciences. More specifically you will be studying gut health in the piglet in the framework of a VLAIO grant: Introduction and optimization of novel rearing strategies to obtain more resilient pigs.
  • You conduct animal experiments both under standardized conditions (at the University facility) and under field conditions. The different work packages of the grant are realized in close collaboration with the Faculty Bio-engineering of Ghent University. At the University of Antwerp the main focus will be drenching of bioactive substances and studying the morphology parameters describing gut health using other than drenching novel rearing strategies (split-suckling and multi-suckling)
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in Veterinary Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry & Biotechnology or Bio-engineering
  • You hold a certificate that allows you to work with laboratory animals (according to Belgian legislation category C).
  • You can submit outstanding academic results.
  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
  • You have a vivid interest in experimental physio-morphological research. Any experience or knowledge of the pork industry is considered a plus.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • You can speak Dutch and are proficient in communicating (written and spoken) in English

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of 1 year, 3 times renewable positive evaluation>;
    the start date of the scholarship 1 October 2017;
  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.280,27 – € 2.419,84
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.

A pre-selection will be made from amongst the submitted applications.
The remainder of the selection procedure is specific to the position and will be determined by the selection panel.
The interviews of the candidates, preselected by a selection panel, will take place on 5th and 6th July 2017
