Biochemical Engineering Jobs | PhD Position @ KIT Germany

Biochemical Engineering Jobs | PhD Position @ KIT Germany: The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT; German: Karlsruher Institut für Technologie) is one of the largest and most prestigious research and education institutions inGermany known for its high quality of research work around the world.

KIT was created in 2009 when the University of Karlsruhe (Universität Karlsruhe), founded in 1825 as public research university and also known as “Fridericiana”, merged with the Karlsruhe Research Center Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, which was originally established as a national nuclear research center (Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe, or KfK) in 1956.[5]

KIT is one of the leading universities in the Engineering and Natural Sciences in Europe, ranking sixth overall in citation impact.[6] KIT is a member of the TU9 [7] German Institutes of Technology e.V. As part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative KIT was accredited with the excellence status in 2006. In the 2011 performance ranking of scientific papers, Karlsruhe ranked first in Germany and among the top ten universities in Europe in engineering and natural sciences.[8]

In the 2015 QS World University Rankings the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology achieved 93rd place in the global ranking across all disciplines and 62nd and 34th place in engineering and natural sciences, respectively.[9] In the 2013 Taiwan ranking, KIT (world rank 61) remained the best German University in the engineering and natural sciences,[10]ranked in the engineering sciences ahead of the RWTH Aachen (world rank 89), the Technical University of Munich (world rank 94) and the Technical University of Dresden (world rank 108). For the natural sciences KIT (world rank 51) led the domestic comparison against the LMU Munich (world rank 62), the University of Heidelberg (world rank 72) and the Technical University of Munich (world rank 81).

Job Profile Nr. 14-2016 IHM

PhD thesis: Pulsed electric field (PEF) assisted protein recovery from microalgae biomass for food and feed applications

Job description: Pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment permeabilizes the plasma membrane of microalgae, and considerably enhances component transfer across the cell envelope, while maintaining cell shape for excellent mechanical separability of targeted compounds from residual biomass. In addition PEF-processing of microalgae biomass allows subsequent recovery of different component fractions from microalgae as proteins and lipids.

In collaboration with University of Hohenheim and Institute of Process Engineering in Life Sciences (BVT) at KIT this project aims at optimization of PEF-assisted protein recovery and valorization of residuals for food and feed utilization.

Major working directions are:

(1) Adaption of extraction and treatment protocols for PEF-assisted protein recovery to nutritional and functional needs in food and feed processing industry. This work includes characterization of proteins for size, zeta-potential, emulsifying and foam forming properties, etc.
(2) Maximization of protein recovery yields while preserving the fractionating abilities of PEF-processing by modifying extraction buffers (pH, reducing agents, etc.) and by studying the influence of cultivation strategy on protein extractability.
(3) Assessment of the potential of valorization of residual fractions of microalgae biomass for animal feed applications.

Project goal is to demonstrate advantageous PEF-assisted processing routes for high-yield multi component recovery and utilization for food and feed production with special emphasis on protein recovery.
