Job Description: This is a full-time internship opportunity from June – August 2017.

In the small molecule drug discovery process, protein structures are crucial to informing structure-based chemistry design.

During this internship, the candidate will strive to advance understanding of inhibition of a small molecule drug target. This project will involve expressing recombinant protein in insect cells using baculoviral infection. The protein will be purified using various methods including affinity purification, ion exchange chromatography, and size exclusion chromatography. Purified protein will be analyzed using a variety of biophysical methods including ITC, DSF, SPR, and x-ray crystallography with support and training from the Physical Biochemistry team.

Qualifications

  • Experience with protein expression or purification (preferred, not required)
  • Knowledge of biophysical techniques (i.e., thermal shift or SPR)
  • Willingness and eagerness to perform experiments and contribute to drug discovery efforts
  • Ability to communicate scientific results in small group settings

To participate in the Biogen Intern Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate program, returning to the academic program following Biogen Intern assignment
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.2 preferred
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date

Education

  • Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related discipline
