Biogeochemical Modelling Jobs | Postdoc position @ UEF

Biogeochemical Modelling Jobs | Postdoc position @ UEF, Finland: The University of Eastern Finland was formed through a merger of two formerly independent universities, the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio. These ceased to exist when the University of Eastern Finland began to operate in January 2010. The merger was affected by the university sector reform carried out in Finland in 2009–2010, which occurred when the previous Universities Act of 1997 was replaced by a newly enacted Universities Act of 2009 (558/2009). The new Universities Act further extended the autonomy of Finnish universities by giving each university an independent legal personality, either as a public corporation or as foundation. At the same time, the universities’ management and decision-making system were reformed. The Finnish Parliament passed the Universities Act on 16 June 2009.

Postdoctoral Researcher (Terrestrial Biogeochemical Modelling)

The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,000 students and 2,800 members of staff. We operate on three campuses in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading 300 universities in the world.

The Faculty of Science and Forestry operates on the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses of the University of Eastern Finland. The mission of the faculty is to carry out internationally recognised scientific research and to offer research-education in the fields of natural sciences and forest sciences. The faculty invests in all of the strategic research areas of the university. The faculty’s environments for research and learning are international, modern and multidisciplinary. The faculty has approximately 3,800 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students and some 490 postgraduate students. The number of staff amounts to 560. http://www.uef.fi/en/lumet/etusivu

We are now inviting applications for

a Postdoctoral Researcher (Terrestrial Biogeochemical Modelling Jobs) position, Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Kuopio Campus

We seek a highly motivated candidate for a Postdoctoral Researcher position with expertise in the development, testing and application of below- and above-ground biogeochemical and regional models, with a focus on high-latitude systems and climate feedbacks. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work on vegetation and soil biogeochemistry, testing the model against past and new field data, and applying the model to characterise feedbacks – past, present and future.

The work will focus on several high-latitude processes, including characterisation of soil permafrost, characterisation of high-latitude vegetation; prediction of future vegetation distributions; soil-plant biophysical feedbacks with the atmosphere; interactions between plant and soil microbial N demands; and impacts on the surface energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets due to changes in vegetation, biogeochemistry, hydrology and land water interactions.

The work will be based at the Biogeochemistry Research Group, Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be working in an Academy of Finland funded consortium project, Carbon dynamics across Arctic landscape gradients: past, present and future (CAPTURE). The other consortium partners are the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Helsinki.

A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF Administrative Regulations 30 §).

The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher position is required to hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. An ideal applicant will have a wide range of skills, including the use of state-of-the-art land-surface models; GIS, programming, understanding of methods to model vegetation and belowground processes and dynamics; Holocene peatland model linking existing palaeo data, excellent oral and written presentation of results; and ability to work independently and in an integrated team environment. Applicants must have a recent PhD in an applicable discipline.

The position will be filled for a fixed term of 12 months starting September 1, 2016 or as agreed. The continuation of the position will be agreed separately. The position is filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project.
