For Bioengineering Technology TC, Technology Campus De Nayer Sint-Katelijne-Waver we are looking for a
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER APPLIED BIOINFORMATICS & BIOSTATISTICS

The Faculty of Engineering Technology, located on Campus De Nayer (Sint-Katelijne-Waver), and the Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems of KU Leuven invite applications for a 3 year post-doctoral position in Applied Bioinformatics and Biostatistics.
We are looking for a dynamic and motivated candidate with research experience in applied data analysis in the field of microbiology and microbial ecology, and with the necessary competences to teach courses in these fields (especially in the field of statistics and bioinformatics).

Responsibilities

General introduction

The main working place of the candidate will be the Laboratory of Process Microbial Ecology and Bioinspirational Management (PME&BIM) at Campus De Nayer in Sint-Katelijne Waver which is one of the operational sites of the Faculty of Engineering Technology. The faculty is a multi-campus faculty following the integration of the engineering technology educational programs of the KU Leuven. The faculty has its own teaching, research and doctoral profile. PME&BIM is embedded within the Technology Cluster of Bioengineering Technology (CBeT) belonging to the Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems (M2S), and is internationally recognized for its research in the field of applied microbiology and microbial ecology. PME&BIM studies the role and ecology of microbial communities and members thereof in diverse natural and man-made environments or processes to better understand and manage these processes. More particularly, PME&BIM aims to gain more insights in the modulatory role of microbes in these habitats by the use of state-of-the-art molecular microbiological methods, and focuses both on pathogenic and beneficial microbes.

The appointee will be expected to perform according to profile and specific criteria of the Faculty of Engineering Technology and he/she will be evaluated regarding these criteria.

Research
The research group is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the field of (micro)biology, applied biostatistics and biostatistics. The successful candidate will:

  • be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and implementing new computational tools and methodologies that will meet the scientific needs of the research group;
  • develop automated pipelines for large scale data analyses in support of basic science and translational research, from raw data acquisition from instruments, through primary and secondary analyses, and to data visualization, secure data dissemination, and long-term data storage;
  • be responsible for designing and carrying out bioinformatics and biostatistical analyses of next generation sequencing (NGS) datasets from a variety of platforms, including Illumina, Roche, Minion and PacBio;
  • Assist in experimental design, data handling and analysis practices for a variety of experimental approaches, including metagenomics, phenomics, genomics, RNA-seq, and ribosomal RNA gene profiling;
  • Network with industrial and academic partners in the field of the offered position;
  • The candidate is also expected to develop his/her own research, preferably in close cooperation with stakeholders in the field (e.g. through contract research, research projects or master theses) to achieve industrial innovation and scientific output that adheres to the highest international standards. Therefore, past experience in project applications will be highly appreciated.

These research activities have to be developed to strengthen ongoing research in the PME&BIM research group. The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of Prof. B. Lievens and Prof. H. Rediers.

Teaching
The successful candidate will take on teaching responsibilities in the Bachelor and Master of Science in Engineering Technology, option Chemistry/Biochemistry. Experience in the teaching of courses related to microbiology, biostatistics and bioinformatics is a considerable plus. The appointee is also willing to teach or coordinate other courses (in Dutch) related to his/her domain of expertise and to guide master theses.

Service
In addition to the research and teaching assignment, the selected candidate must be willing to perform scientific, societal and internal services. Especially collaboration with other laboratories within CBeT, the industry and government is important.
