The department of psychiatry and neurochemistry is home to educational programs and internationally leading research in human behaviour, neuropsychiatric disease mechanisms, and psychiatric treatment and diagnostics.
The overarching aim is to increase our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of mood disorders and how they relate to the clinical picture. We also hope to identify biomarkers to complement diagnosis, predict treatment response or side effects and provide prognostic assessments for psychiatric disorders. The aim is to develop tools to enable a personalized psychiatric care. We conduct data collection of clinical cohorts collaboration with psychiatri clinics as well as large scale national cohort collections. We combine collected information from national quality registers and biological analyses (genomics, proteomics and metabolomics). More information on ongoing research projects can be found on our website www.cibris.se.

The current research project will apply bioinformatic and statistical tools on the large data sets that are generated by our ongoing research projects. The aim is to find biological pathways that increase our understanding of the biological underpinnings of affective disorders, as well as establishing biomarker profiles that predict outcomes and side effects of treatment.

Subject area
Bioinformatics/Biostatistics

Specific subject description
Bioinformatics and biostatistics research encompasses a number of specific scientific questions. In our projects we are mainly interested in methods to 1) structure and analyze large data sets; 2) develop prognostic algorithms from such data sets, and 3) combine data from different sources, e.g., genetic and clinical data, to discover novel data associations.

Job assignments
The position involves the use of bioinformatics and biostatistical methodology in clinical psychiatric research. We collaborate with the neurochemistry laboratory at the University of Gothenburg, the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet, and Swedish national quality registers. The applicant will work with several patient cohorts, including clinical studies on bipolar disorder (www.cibris.se). The applicant is expected to work with research questions that are formulated in collaboration with the primary investigator, but it will also be possible to develop individual research questions. The research will span epidemiological analyses of register data to studies on individual DNA, protein, and peptide biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Scientific findings will be published.

Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher, the applicant should hold a PhD in bioinformatics/biostatistics or equivalent academic field. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.

Assessment
The most important factor is extensive experience in bioformatics/biostatistical research. The applicant needs to be used to writing computer procedures (e.g. SAS or R) for statistical analysis. Experience in using bioinformatics databases or software is a merit. Further, experience in psychiatric or neuroscience research is an additional merit. Finally, the applicant needs to be proficient in speaking and writing English, although fluency in Swedish is not a requirement.
