DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Reproductive Medicine strives to provide excellent clinical care to women while conducting cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research in reproductive endocrinology, oncology, pelvic medicine, gynecologic disorders, and complications of pregnancy.

The Bioinformatics Specialist will be responsible for independent analysis of genomic data and the presentation and discussion of results for a broad range of projects, including discovery of biomarkers associated with pregnancy complications, and discovery of regulatory networks driving cell differentiation. These problems are addressed using stem cell biology, computational biology, genomics, biochemistry, and molecular biology approaches. Duties will include identifying existing tools and developing novel algorithms to assess quality, consistency and integrity of data and to test research hypotheses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of biology and biomedical informatics or related field as typically attained by a Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret/coordinate research protocols and the corresponding data requirements.
  • Experience with the design, development, and maintenance of data collections used for data storage and analysis in a biomedical research environment.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and creating web applications and virtual machines.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and problem solve in computational work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple computer programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point and Access, as well as the ability to create and maintain databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize large volumes of data using creative tools, logs and databases created to use with multiple research projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. Ability to work successfully with a diverse group of people with varying perspectives and needs. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Outstanding writing and editing skills using knowledge of conventions of academic style, English grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Demonstrated ability to re-write text that is ambiguous, unorganized or grammatically incorrect.

Strong decision making skills and ability to use independent judgment and discretion to quickly set priorities and establish new procedures when needed. Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, recommend, communicate, and implement solutions. Must be able to function successfully with minimal direction
