About the Job

Primary responsibility will be to assist with projects related to pain biology and analgesic pharmacology. Secondary responsibility will be to assist with studies on lung biology and inflammation.

The work may include:

  • 60% Execute and help troubleshoot scientific experiments for the PI and other laboratory members; writing laboratory standard operating procedures for these experiments.
  • Maintain study databases and accurate data entry.
  • Prepare materials, solutions, reagents, media or stains for prescribed laboratory tests and experiments.
  • 20% Operate routine lab equipment such as balances, pH meters, centrifuges, thermal cycler, microscopes, record results, both manually and using image analysis software, analyze and interpret data, summarize results in charts.
  • Keep meticulously detailed records of all experiments and procedures.
  • Help train undergraduate and graduate students in laboratory procedures, assisting them with troubleshooting experiments and data analysis for required projects.
  • 10% Perform maintenance of laboratory equipment: Ensuring equipment is functioning properly and repaired by the appropriate person. Maintain inventory of supplies and ordering items as necessary.
  • Provides assistance to laboratory colleagues, graduate students, external clinicians, and others as directed
  • 10% Order, prepare and stock supplies, and maintain equipment and laboratory area. Assist with other special projects or initiatives as needed.
  • Participate in meetings with the PI and help coordinate/plan laboratory experiments and activities

About the Department

The Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department provides instruction to veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students and improves the health of companion animals by educating veterinarians, providing medical and surgical services, and generating new knowledge through clinical research.


Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members are responsible for a significant portion of the clinical training program for third- and fourth-year veterinary students, as well as small animal internship and residency programs. Faculty members also participate in the veterinary medicine and comparative and molecular biosciences graduate programs.

Faculty and staff are actively involved in clinical and basic research, as well as specialized programs such as the Animal Cancer Care and Research program, Minnesota Urolith Center, and Surgical Research Laboratory. Research efforts are supported by the Clinical Investigation Center, which coordinates clinical trials.


Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members provide clinical services in the Veterinary Medical Center and offer consultations and continuing education programs for practicing veterinarians in the community.
