BioMedical PhD Student Position Available @ KU Leuven Belgium: The University of Leuven was founded at the centre of the historic town of Leuven in 1425, making it Belgium’s first university. After being closed in 1797 during the Napoleonic period, the Catholic University of Leuven was “re-founded” in 1834, and is frequently, but controversially, identified as a continuation of the older institution.A In 1968 the Catholic University of Leuven split into the Dutch-language Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the French-language Université catholique de Louvain, which moved to Louvain-la-Neuve in Wallonia.

PHD POSITION: THE REGULATION OF MOTILIN RELEASE AND ITS ROLE IN FOOD INTAKE
(Ref. DOCO-2016-126)
Place: Leuven
Apply until: 30/06/2017

The Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders (TARGID, www.targid.eu) is looking for a highly motivated PhD-student, who is interested in both clinical as well as basic research.

PHD POSITION: THE REGULATION OF MOTILIN RELEASE AND ITS ROLE IN FOOD INTAKE

Attention! Financing for this position is not guaranteed, but will need to be applied for with the support of a supervisor at a scholarship organization. Applying to this position will bring you in contact with a potential supervisor.
TARGID aims to provide insight in physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms in order to identify new targets to treat gastrointestinal disorders. To this end, pre-clinical and clinical expertise is combined with state of the art technology to provide top quality research and to create a stimulating setting for bidirectional interaction between basic and clinical researchers. This approach allows fast translation of discoveries from bench to bedside with improvement of patient care as ultimate goal.
Project

Motilin is a gut hormone produced by the duodenum that regulates gastrointestinal motility during the fasting state. Our group has demonstrated for the first time that motilin plasma levels are significantly increased in obese patients and decrease after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery to levels of healthy controls. Moreover, we have provided evidence that motilin is involved in the regulation of hunger sensation and acts as a gut-brain signal in the control of appetite. Intragastric administration of bitter agonists reduced the release of motilin in healthy subjects together with a decrease in hunger and food intake. These findings make motilin an interesting target for the treatment of obesity.
Unfortunately the motilin cell is poorly studied so many aspects concerning the regulation and control of secretion still remain unresolved. The aims of this PhD project are therefore to study the mechanisms involved in the release of motilin (both in vivo and in vitro) and to investigate brain mechanisms underlying the effect of motilin signaling on subjective feelings of hunger in health and obesity.
With this multidisciplinary bench to bedside research approach the PhD project will take optimal advantage of the knowledge and expertise in the TARGID laboratory.

Profile

We are looking for a PhD-student with a Master degree in Biomedical Sciences (or an equivalent degree) and who is highly motivated to perform both clinical and basic research. Applicants should be able to work well in team and must have a great sense of initiative and responsibility. Only applicants fluent in both Dutch and English will be considered for this vacancy.
