Biomedical Sciences Job | Scientist Position @ SOLEIL France

Biomedical Sciences Job | Scientist Position @ SOLEIL France: SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary
instrument and a research laboratory, whose mission is to run research programs using synchrotron radiation, to
develop state-of-the-art instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make those available to the scientific community.
SOLEIL, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines
including physics, biology, chemistry etc., is used by over 5 000 researchers coming from France and abroad. It is
based on a state-of-the-art synchrotron source, both in terms of brilliance and stability. The facility is a “public”
company employing about 500 people, founded by the CNRS and the CEA, and partner of the Paris-Saclay

Biomedical Sciences Job | Scientist Position @ SOLEIL France

Position opens in 1st of January 2017
SMIS beamline: The SMIS Beamline (Spectroscopy and Microscopy in the Infrared using Synchrotron) utilizes both edge and bending magnet radiation from the Soleil storage ring. The two sources are simultaneously used with two
independent beamline branches. The synchrotron beam can be directed towards several different instruments that
allow infrared hyperspectral imaging and spectroscopy from the nanometer to millimeter range. The online facilities
in operation include diffraction-limited raster scanning with conventional point-to-point FTIR microscopes as well as several custom-made instruments developed at the beamline. The beamline is currently undergoing a significant
upgrade to both instrumentation and optics, and two newly acquired systems, also defining future strategic scientific
directions, are currently under development include near-field IR microscopy and large area FTIR imaging for

The beamline users are drawn from a diverse community of researchers, with backgrounds in Biology, Biomedical
Sciences, Agriculture, Astrophysics, Geology and Earth Sciences, Soft Matter, Physics and Chemistry. A large
variety of sample environments are available at the beamline including heating and cooling devices, a sample
stretching device, a horizontal axis microscope for very high-pressure studies, a dedicated synchrotron ATR
microscope for in situ experiments, and an ultra-high vacuum vessel for surface science studies.

For further details the publication list of SMIS activity (both beamline users’ and in-house research) is available
online at: http://goo.gl/HiZbKf

1. Mission
An opportunity exists for a beamline scientist (permanent position) to join the SMIS beamline team, working under
the supervision of the beamline manager. The successful candidate will be involved in both the scientific and
methodological aspects of beamline activities, and sufficient time will be allowed in order to develop a research
program either as part of the existing subjects on the beamline or as an independent activity. Collaboration with
other complementary beamlines at SOLEIL is encouraged.

The SMIS team currently consists of scientists with backgrounds in biology/biospectroscopy and
materials science/physical chemistry. The successful candidate will have expertise commensurate with the areas of
beamline activity cited above, and complementary to the existing staff. Preference will be given to candidates with
experience in the field of the physical sciences.

In particular, he/she will be expected to: Propose or develop a research program in relation to the capabilities and existing research of the beamline (http://www.synchrotronsoleil.fr/portal/page/portal/Recherche/LignesLumiere/SMIS), taking full benefit from the different experimental setups at SMIS. Support users during operation of the beamline.
Develop collaborations with the members of the scientific communities of the SMIS beamline, and attract new
beamline users drawn from the candidates’ area of expertise.

Beamline scientist on SMIS beamline (m/f)- permanent position
Take an active part in the development, installation, and commissioning of new instrumentation and optics for the
beamline. The position requires multidisciplinary skills, a sense of responsibility and autonomy together with the ability to work within the beamline team.

2. Qualifications & Experience
Candidates are required to have a PhD in a relevant field, with postdoctoral or equivalent experience and
demonstrated skills in the area of spectroscopy. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is essential: FTIR,
solid-state physics, high-pressure DAC studies, atomic force microscopy, or statistical data processing. Additional
experience in instrumentation development and software control of equipment would be an advantage. Good time
management skills and the ability to communicate and interact with staff, collaborating partners and facility users at
all levels, are essential.
The candidate must have a good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of French, the working
language at SOLEIL, would be highly appreciated, although lessons will be offered to non-native French speakers.

3. General conditions
The offer concerns a permanent position. The remuneration will be based on the SOLEIL salary scale, and
determined according to the professional background, qualifications and degrees held by the candidate.
The place of work will be at Synchrotron SOLEIL, which is located in the Paris suburbs (Saint-Aubin), and the
position is open to people with disabilities.
