2017BAPFFBDEF008 – PhD student Investigating the mechanistic convergence of signaling systems linking arterial stiffening to dementia

The Translational Neurobiology group of the VIB Center of Molecular Neurology is looking for a highly motivated PhD student (100%) who wants to join our team in the research topic:

Investigating the mechanistic convergence of signaling systems linking arterial stiffening to dementia

Research environment:

The VIB Center of Molecular Neurology (CMN, former Department of Molecular Genetics) is part of the VIB life sciences institute (www.vib.be) and is embedded within the University of Antwerp (UA). The VIB CMN has been one of the world’s leading institutes in the field of complex neurological disorders including: dementia, aging, epilepsy, and peripheral neuropathies.

Within this environment, Prof. Dr. Stuart Maudsley leads the Translation Neurobiology research group. Building on the genomic discoveries of VIB CMN, our group has implemented translational research using quantitative systems biology, pharmacology, proteomic and bioinformatics approaches to study how multifactorial neurodegenerative diseases are generated through the structured and directed interaction of gene and protein networks. This unique approach will enhance our knowledge of the biochemistry and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration. Our advances will accelerate the development of tractable receptor-based therapeutic strategies that exert beneficial effects across these pathological networks.

Job description:

We are looking for a highly motivated, creative and enthusiastic PhD student to join our collegial team of international researchers. The focus of the challenging PhD project is to investigate the converging molecular ‘signature’ mechanisms linking arterial stiffening and dementia. This project will be performed in close collaboration with the laboratories of Profs. Dr. Guido De Meyer and Patrick D’Haese at the UA. You will join a growing and committed research team, which can rely on an extensive worldwide international research network. Working in the team of Prof. Maudsley will allow the candidate the opportunity to acquire a broad experience in molecular and cellular biology, in vivo animal models, applied bioinformatics, receptor pharmacology and state-of-the-art mass spectrometry devices for systems biology studies including: Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid and Rapiflex MALDI Tissuetyper (unique in Belgium).

Your profile:

  • Applicants should hold a BSc and/or MSc degree in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacology or any related discipline.
  • The candidate should be super-motivated, flexible, dedicated to conduct a challenging project in a highly competitive research field, and be eligible for application to (inter)national scholarships.
  • You also have good communication skills in spoken and written English and demonstrate a good team ethic.
  • Applicants with any experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture, vasculature or dementia are highly encouraged to apply.
  • You are able to start your project latest September 2017.

We offer:

We offer an exciting and challenging position in a dynamic, fun and highly innovative research group for 1 year with potential extension up to 4 years after positive evaluation. The student’s salary will be determined according to the standard pay scales of the UA (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/jobs/what-do-we-offer/salaries/).

How to apply:

Applications for this PhD position should be submitted to Prof. Dr. Stuart Maudsley (stuart.maudsley@molgen.vib-ua.be) before 24th of February 2017. Your application file should contain a motivation letter, CV and publication list (if applicable), a summary of your previous research experience, your marks/degrees obtained during your Bachelors/Master studies. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview.
