Bioprocess Engineering PhD Position Available @ Max Planck Magdeburg Germany

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Bioprocess Engineering (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Reichl), has an opening for a PhD position.

The position is granted for three years at the International Max Planck Research School Magdeburg for Advanced Methods in Process and Systems Engineering with a salary according to the German pay grade to conduct scientific research. An extension is possible.

Aim of the project

The Bioprocess Engineering Group develops mathematical models to describe cell growth and virus production for the design and optimization of vaccine manufacturing processes. This includes the analysis of comprehensive experimental data sets generated in our laboratories addressing virus-host cell interaction at the single cell and the cell population level. In the project planned, the focus will be on influenza A virus replication in mammalian cells, defective interfering particle (DIP) formation, and DIP/standard virus co-infection in cell cultures using ODE-based and stochastic models as well as other advanced systems biological tools.

Your profile

  • We seek for a candidate with a master’s degree in biosystems engineering, biotechnology, computational biology or related engineering and natural science disciplines.
  • Knowledge about model construction, parameter estimation, model simulation and model validation as well as solid experience with programming languages (MATLAB, C++) is appreciated.
  • Moreover, the ideal candidate is highly motivated to work efficiently, self-directed and as part of an interdisciplinary team on scientific challenges.
