Biotechnology Jobs | PhD Position @ Ghent University

Biotechnology Jobs | PhD Position @ Ghent University, Belgium: Established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands, Ghent University (Dutch: Universiteit Gent, abbreviated as UGent) is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly-formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, it became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium—French having been the academic language up to that point. In 1991, the university was granted major autonomy and changed its name from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation. It is one of the larger Flemish universities, consisting of 41,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The current rector is Anne De Paepe (nl).

Ghent consistently rates among the top universities not only in Belgium but also throughout the world. As of 2015, Ghent University ranks 118th globally according to Times Higher Education, 124th according to QS World University Rankings, and 71st according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Job description

At the Inflammation Research Center, VIB-UGent, we are looking for enthusiastic candidates to apply for a Doctoral (PhD) Grant Strategic Basic Research grant. We offer a dynamic working environment, stimulating scientific surrounding in a young, enthusiastic, motivated team (with English as main language), multiple training possibilities and access to state-of-the-art technologies. In the group of Mathieu Bertrand, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate to work on “Study of the role of RIPK1 phosphorylation in the regulation of TNF-mediated inflammatory responses”.

Summary of the project (Biotechnology Jobs | PhD Position @ Ghent University, Belgium):

TNF is a master pro-inflammatory cytokine that promotes inflammation either directly by driving gene activation, or indirectly by inducing cell death. RIPK1 emerged as a key molecule in the TNFR1 signaling pathway. It functions as a platform for gene activation and as a kinase to mediate cell death, but the molecular mechanisms regulating RIPK1 functions are currently unknown. We recently found that RIPK1 is heavily phosphorylated at the receptor complex, and this research project aims at revealing and characterizing the physiological role of RIPK1 phosphorylation in the regulation of its functions. The proposed work plan integrates the biochemical characterization of RIPK1 kinases/phosphatases, the demonstration of their cellular consequences on the regulation of RIPK1 functions, and the in vivo validation of our findings in different mouse model of disease. In order to reach these goals, we will identify the residues of RIPK1 that are phosphorylated by these kinases and generate RIPK1 knockin mouse lines carrying mutations in these residues.

Profile of the candidate

You have recently obtained or will soon be obtaining a master diploma (*) from one of the countries of the European Union or the European Economic Area (**) or Switzerland in biomedical sciences, bio-engineering, biotechnology, medicine or any related discipline, preferably with very good study results. * with the exclusion of master-after-master diplomas as described in the Higher Education Register (www.hogeronderwijsregister.be) ** The EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

You are eligible. More details see http://www.fwo.be/en/fellowships-funding/phd-fellowships/doctoral-%28phd%29-grant-strategic-basic-research-%28sb%29/

You have

  • a passion for inflammatory research and science in general
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • The candidate should have well-developed social skills and be able to work in a team
