Chemistry Catalysis PhD Position Available @ KU Leuven Belgium:  The research activities of the Biology Department are diverse, and include molecular and physiological studies at cellular and organismal level as well as ecological research focusing on populations, communities and ecosystems. Although many research groups carry out in-depth analyses on specific model organisms, the diversity of life forms studied by the department as a whole is impressive. Our studies are embedded in a dense network of international contacts with universities, research institutes and companies. The department attracts many students and hosts approximately 250 staff members. Context and job description:
The Ameloot group at the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (KU Leuven) is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to explore the applications of 3D printing in catalysis. The development of 3D printing and related additive manufacturing technologies have recently gained momentum in a spectacular way. Based on a computer model, these printing tools enable the direct and automated fabrication of a real-world object with an arbitrarily complex geometry, not accessible via conventional machining. The goal of this project is to explore the opportunities of inkjet-based 3D printing at the interface of chemistry and engineering.

The Center for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis constitutes an interdisciplinary team of eight professors focused on researching the chemistry of the solid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-solid interphases. The Centre currently hosts over 120 PhD students, postdoctoral scholars and technicians and is internationally recognized for its expertise in gas and liquid phase catalysis, porous materials synthesis and characterization, adsorptive separations, and related challenges in chemistry and chemical engineering. Profile

We are seeking:

  • A highly motivated candidate with a strong academic record in the field of Chemical Engineering, Chemistry,
  • Materials Engineering or a related field in Science and Engineering.
  • A candidate with a true passion for both science and technology and excited by realizing the potential of 3D printing, irrespective of your background.
  • Previous experience with heterogeneous catalysis OR 3D printing/additive manufacturing is considered a plus.
  • Previous demonstrations of out-of-the-box thinking. Bonus points if you consider yourself a ‘maker’, we appreciate what you are doing!
  • A team player and clear communicator able to professionally handle contacts with local and international collaborators
  • Since we are a highly international team, proficiency in both written and spoken English is non-negotiable.
