Chemistry Catalysis PhD Position Available @ KU Leuven Belgium

Location: Situated in the heart of Western Europe, KU Leuven (University of Leuven) has been a center of learning for nearly six centuries. Today, it is Belgium’s largest and highest-ranked university and, founded in 1425, one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe. The university caters to over 55 000 students, of which 18 % are international students from more than 140 countries. KU Leuven’s three doctoral schools provide internationally oriented PhD tracks for more than 4,000 doctoral students. KU Leuven and affiliated knowledge institutes provide fertile ground for innovation and high-tech entrepreneurship in the Leuven region. They also generate a huge inflow of state-of-the-art knowledge that brings with it a myriad of innovative ideas for new and existing companies. This favorable climate for knowledge-driven entrepreneurship and innovation makes the Leuven region an attractive location for many high-tech companies. Most of the KU Leuven spin-off companies (> 100 in business) are located in or around Leuven. KU Leuven has been ranked for two consecutive years as the most ‘innovative university’ in Europe, determined based on patent filings and valorization track. Context and job description:
The Ameloot group at the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (KU Leuven) is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to explore the applications of 3D printing in catalysis. The development of 3D printing and related additive manufacturing technologies have recently gained momentum in a spectacular way. Based on a computer model, these printing tools enable the direct and automated fabrication of a real-world object with an arbitrarily complex geometry, not accessible via conventional machining. The goal of this project is to explore the opportunities of inkjet-based 3D printing at the interface of chemistry and engineering.

The Center for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis constitutes an interdisciplinary team of eight professors focused on researching the chemistry of the solid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-solid interphases. The Centre currently hosts over 120 PhD students, postdoctoral scholars and technicians and is internationally recognized for its expertise in gas and liquid phase catalysis, porous materials synthesis and characterization, adsorptive separations, and related challenges in chemistry and chemical engineering. For more information on prof. Rob Ameloot who leads this project, including ERC-awarded research and previous publications in top journals such as Nature Materials, Nature Chemistry, Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie, etc, please refer to http://amelootgroup.org/ (check out the video on our brand-new facilities!) and http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=8GN5hk8AAAAJ&hl=en

We are seeking:

  • A highly motivated candidate with a strong academic record in the field of Chemical Engineering, Chemistry,
  • Materials Engineering or a related field in Science and Engineering.
  • A candidate with a true passion for both science and technology and excited by realizing the potential of 3D printing, irrespective of your background.
  • Previous experience with heterogeneous catalysis OR 3D printing/additive manufacturing is considered a plus.
  • Previous demonstrations of out-of-the-box thinking. Bonus points if you consider yourself a ‘maker’, we appreciate what you are doing!
  • A team player and clear communicator able to professionally handle contacts with local and international collaborators
  • Since we are a highly international team, proficiency in both written and spoken English is non-negotiable.

The deadline for applying for this opportunity is July 14, 2017.

Preferred starting date: Sept-Oct 2017

• Unique opportunity to pioneer the application of 3D printing in unexplored domains
• Work at a leading scientific institution with dedicated professionals
• Development and operation of a unique ‘chemical’ 3D printing setup
• Offering outstanding career development and professional support
• Participation in an EU-wide H2020 project consortium involving leading academic groups, research organizations, industrial catalyst manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies.

For more information about this job opportunity and submitting your application, please contact Prof. dr. ir. Rob Ameloot (Rob.Ameloot@kuleuven.be). Please mention “PhD position 3D printing” in the subject line. Include your CV, cover letter, publication list and all other information you consider relevant.
