Chemistry PostDoctoral Fellow Position @ Adelaide University | Australia

University Research Fellow/University Postdoctoral Fellow

Job no: 495691
Work type: Fixed term – Full-time
Location: Adelaide
Categories: Faculty of Sciences, Level A, Level B

  • Prestigious international university
  • Wide range of employee benefits
  • Electrospray Mass Spectrometry Project

University of Adelaide employees enjoy a range of benefits and favourable work conditions that include opportunities for career development and advancement.

The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. As a research and education leader in fields such as biomedical sciences, agricultural, environmental and earth sciences, and photonics, the faculty offers an exciting and innovative work environment.

The School of Physical Sciences is one of four Schools in the Faculty of Sciences. Located at the University’s North Terrace campus, the School brings together the internationally recognised contemporary disciplines of chemistry; earth science; and physics, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education, training and research with both national relevance and global outreach and networks in the public and private sectors.
The vision of the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) is to pursue a transdisciplinary approach that brings together experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists and medical researchers to create new sensing and measurement technologies in order to solve major challenges. Further information on the Institute can be found at www.adelaide.edu.au/ipas.

The Optical Materials and Structure Research Theme at IPAS, through the School of Physical Sciences, has recently secured funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) for the development of new glass components to enhance the sensitivity of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The project aims to advance fabrication of glass capillaries and tubes with complex and high precision structures to enable both multiplexing ion generation from a single capillary and geometrical matching the shape of the bore of the tube collecting the emitted ion plume. Mass spectrometry has become an indispensible analytical tool for proteomics and synthetic chemistry and thus the significant enhancement of mass spectrometry sensitivity in this project will accelerate progress in disease research, biomarker discovery and drug development.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with background in materials science, photonics, physical chemistry or engineering to drive the development and fabrication of the new glass capillaries and tubes.

Salary: (Level A) $80,881 to $86,820 or (Level B) $91,393 to $108,532 per annum commensurate with experience

Superannuation: An employer contribution of 17% may apply

Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for up to three years

Position requirements:
Level A

  • PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in related relevant area of materials science, photonics, physical chemistry or engineering
  • A commitment to research excellence in materials science or physics
  • Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
