Cognitive Genetics PhD Position @ Antwerp University Belgium:

PhD position, Cognitive genetics (trinucleotide repeats) – 2018BAPFFBDEF276
The mission of our research group “Cognitive Genetics” within the Centre of Medical Genetics of the University of Antwerp is to unravel genetic causes of cognitive disorders. We then continue to study the function of these underlying genes, as this will contribute to our final goal of developing rational therapy opportunities.

Cognitive Genetics PhD Position @ Antwerp University Belgium

Within the Center of Medical Genetics following function (m/f) is vacant:

PhD (100%) in the domain of cognitive genetics

An increasing amount of causes for autism and intellectual disability are currently being unraveled. In some cases, these diseases are the consequence of an expansion of a trinucleotide repeat; as described for the Fragile X syndrome. With this project we want to identify additional disorders caused by expanding trinucleotide repeats in the genome. This will be done by making use of a combination of bio-informatic tools, the most novel next generation sequencing applications and screening of the patient population. In addition, we want to map the effects of these repeat expansions. Aberrations of the GABAergic-system are found in patients with the fragile X syndrome and other developmental disorders. A second goal of this project is thus to perform a detailed study of transcripts of the GABAergic system in Fragile X, and to compare the results with related developmental disorders.
