Applications close 30 June, 2018.

Deakin University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Research Professor Peter Hodgson said the scholarships, worth $1.2million, would seek to build on Deakin’s distinguished position in higher education.

“Education and skills development have been perhaps the strongest single aspect of the Australia-India relationship. Deakin has enjoyed a strong relationship with India for over two decades now. This has included welcoming thousands of Indian students to study at Deakin over the years,” Professor Hodgson said.

“We’re delighted to help talented students in India help Deakin to make a difference to the communities we serve with this three-year scholarship program. Students funded under this scholarship program will not only greatly benefit from access to the knowledge, facilities and networks offered by Deakin, but will also get the opportunity to work with world-class, leading researchers at the University.”

Deakin’s South Asia operations commenced in 1994 in New Delhi, making it one of the first overseas education providers to set up operations in the region. The University has since formed partnerships with some of India’s leading institutes and organisations.

Deakin’s Deputy Vice President, Global Ms Ravneet Pawha said Deakin was deeply committed to establishing lasting associations with India.

“Deakin has always sought to share a vibrant culture of research and scholastic excellence with a critical mass of researchers associated with each major discipline that has fostered internationally competitive groups in areas of strategic importance.

“Research students are key contributors to enhancing any country’s innovative capacity across all sectors, be it economic or social. This initiative focuses on high-end talent development at PhD level, fostering opportunities for collaboration and driving mobility between industry and academia,” Ms Pawha said.

“By offering such fully funded PhD scholarships to talented Indian students, Deakin serves to enrich the pool of knowledge and expertise available both in Australia and in India into the future, thus giving back to our communities and delivering impact.”
