The University of Helsinki Doctoral Programme In Plant Sciences (DPPS) invites applications for


for a 1–4 year period starting from January 1st 2017. The duration of the employment contract depends on the phase of the appointee’s thesis. The positions are suitable for candidates with a background in plant biology or a related field.

The Doctoral Programme in Plant Sciences is one of the programs in the Doctoral School in Environmental, Food and Biological Sciences (YEB). The director of the doctoral programme is Jaakko Kangasjärvi from the Department of Biosciences. The doctoral programme aims to train scientific researchers in the following themes: molecular plant biology; genetics, genomics and breeding; physiology and biochemistry; developmental biology; pathology and biotechnology; plant production; ecophysiology; systematics and bioenergy. Doctoral training includes a varied international teaching program, participation in courses and meetings within and outside Finland and networking opportunities.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete his or her postgraduate studies. The duties also include teaching and other tasks. Teaching tasks can make up 5 % of the annual working time.

The appointee must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment. The appointee must hold a second-cycle degree (e.g. master’s degree or equivalent) and have a research proposal approved by the doctoral programme. Other requirements include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated through previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal.

The applicant must be able to provide evidence of language proficiency in English, Finnish or Swedish according to the University of Helsinki admissions requirements.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary is EUR 2065–3022 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.

The DPPS board will select an evaluation panel to review and rate all applications. Interviews for shortlisted applicants will be held on Wednesday 2nd November in room 3106, Viikki Biocentre 1, Viikinkaari 5 from 11.00 by an interview panel selected by the DPPS board. Decisions will be made at the end of November 2016 following the interviews and evaluations.
