Drosophila Su(var) Genetics Postdoctoral Position @ Max Planck Germany

Two postdoctoral positions in Drosophila Su(var) genetics are available in the Jenuwein group at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany. Genetic screens for suppressors of position effect variegation (PEV) in Drosophila have been instrumental to identify crucial chromatin regulators that dictate heterochromatin formation. We aim to build a Drosophila project team (consisting of two Postdocs and one research assistant) to continue an ongoing collaboration with the laboratory of Gunter Reuter (University of Halle/Wittenberg). A pipeline has been established in which novel Su(var) mutants were generated by chemical mutagenesis in an isogenic PEV modifier strain (done by the Reuter lab in Halle) and the candidate Su(var) allele is then identified by whole genome sequencing of mutant DNA (done by the Jenuwein lab in Freiburg). Gunter Reuter has pioneered the isolation and characterization of PEV modifier genes and this new Su(var) screen in Drosophila predicts the presence of around 60 novel Su(var) loci.

The postdoctoral positions are open immediately and initially funded for two years.

Your opportunities
This project offers exciting possibilities to characterize novel Su(var) genes and to make a significant contribution for a better understanding of Su(var)-dependent heterochromatin regulation. As a postdoctoral scientist you will lead the isolation and molecular characterization of several of these novel Su(var) genes. The positions allow collaborative work for Su(var) function in both Drosophila and mouse and are supported by synergistic interactions with other team members of the Jenuwein group.

Your tasks
Responsibilities include the mapping of novel Su(var) loci by crossover analyses and CAPS markers, followed by complementation studies to rescue the Su(var) phenotype. Confirmed Su(var) mutants will then be investigated for gene silencing in a variety of PEV modifier strains and for genetic interactions with other known Su(var) genes. The characterization of the novel Su(var) factors involves their immunolocalization at Drosophila chromosomes, ChIP mapping and biochemical definition of protein complex formation and/or enzymatic activity.

Your qualifications
Applicants should have an academic degree in life science plus PhD in chromatin research that documents experience with classical Drosophila genetics. Candidates must have at least one strong first author publication. The ability to work in a team including mentoring of PhD students and good communication skills are expected additional assets.

We offer
Based within a region that connects Germany, France and Switzerland, our institute hosts a vibrant community of international researchers, state-of-the-art facilities and modern office spaces. A childcare facility is directly attached to the institute. At the heart of the Black Forest, Freiburg offers a family-friendly atmosphere and excellent recreational possibilities for cultural and outdoor activities. Salaries will be based on previous experience according to the German pay scale for civil service (TVöD) including health insurance and other social benefits.

The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. Handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.
