Ecology Soil Science PhD Position Available @ SLU Sweden

Ecology Soil Science PhD Position Available @ SLU Sweden: The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Swedish: Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet) (SLU) is a university in Sweden. Although its head office is located in Ultuna, Uppsala, the university has several campuses in different parts of Sweden, the other main facilities being Alnarp in Lomma Municipality, Skara, and Umeå. Unlike other state owned universities in Sweden, it is funded through the budget for the Ministry for Rural Affairs.

Greenhouse gas fluxes from agricultural ecosystems

[TK1] Agricultural management practices have significant impact on fluxes of greenhouse gases (mainly CO2, CH4, N2O) between the ecosystem and the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases emerge mainly through microorganism activity within the ecosystem nutrient cycle (decomposition of organic matter, nitrification, denitrification), where microorganism population dynamics plays an important role.

While fluxes of CO2 and CH4 are controlled by light, temperature, and humidity and generally follow diurnal patterns, little is known about the dynamics of N2O fluxes. A four-year position as PhD student is available at the Department of Ecology to study greenhouse gas fluxes by field measurements and modelling. New technology is available to measure gas fluxes, in particular N2O, at the soil surface and in the turbulent boundary layer above the vegetation. The main goals are to quantify greenhouse gas budgets, to increase understanding of underlying processes, and to estimate the impact of management practices.

Within the Ecology Department we conduct both empirical and theoretical studies of ecosystem fluxes at scales from cell to landscape. The aims are to assess field-scale and regional greenhouse gas budgets and effects of disturbances and climate change, to improve process-based models, and to identify management schemes that increase carbon sequestration by ecosystems.

  • As a PhD student, your main task is to pursue research and graduate studies.
  • An interest in measurement technique, physical and biochemical processes, mathematical formulation and analysis, and programming is required.
  • The work consists of field work, data analysis with statistical software and simulation models, and scientific communication.
  • The student is expected to participate in teaching or other institutional duties to some extent.

  • The applicants should hold a MSc degree including 60 credits in soil science or equivalent subjects.
  • Experience with environmental measurements, database handling, and high-level computer programming is an advantage.
  • Understanding of fluxes within the soil-plant-atmosphere system and knowledge in physics, biology, chemistry, and meteorology is also desirable.
  • The applicant should have proven good skills in both oral and written scientific English, ability and interest for work at remote field sites, and a car driver license.
