At the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) in Mülheim, Germany, a PhD student position is available in the Department of Heterogeneous Reactions, “Electrochemistry” Group, starting earliest from 1st April 2017 or later for a duration of 3 years. The PhD student will be part of the International Max Planck Research School for Interface Controlled Materials for Energy Conversion (IMPRS SurMat).

The project

In course of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources electrical energy conversion plays a decisive role. In this context, electrolyzers are useful tools to use excessive electrical energy, e.g. from solar or wind power, to split water into molecular oxygen and hydrogen. One of the critical components in the electrolyzer is the catalyst for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER).

In this project an alternative approach to test OER catalysts will be pursued. Carbon-based materials can be pressed into solid pellets, which can be used as free-standing, binder-free electrodes. The transport processes and surface phenomena that occur inside a solid, porous carbon electrode (pellet) under electrochemical conditions will be the main focus of research.

Your qualifications

  • a university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, material science, or a similar discipline with an excellent grade; a background in electrochemistry and/or surface characterization are beneficial
  • due to the internationality of our group a very good knowledge of the English language (spoken and written) is absolutely necessary
  • teamwork, good communication and presentation skills
  • high motivation and interest in fundamental research
