The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (http://www.helsinki.fi/af-faculty/), located on the Viikki campus, promotes the sustainable use of natural resources and human wellbeing through scientific research and research-based teaching. The faculty’s key areas of education and research are food, agricultural, forest and environmental sciences, economics and biotechnology. The faculty has 3 200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 500 experts.
The Department of Food and Environmental Sciences (http://www.helsinki.fi/food-and-environment) operates on Viikki campus, an internationally recognized concentration of biosciences. The department provides an active, multidisciplinary research environment as well as excellent research and pilot laboratories (http://www.helsinki.fi/food-and-environment/infra/) for its more than 20 research groups, and employs 200 members of teaching and research staff. Each year the research groups acquire more than EUR 4 million in external research funding and publish some 120 papers in leading international journals. The high quality of the department’s research has been demonstrated in international research assessments conducted at the University of Helsinki.
The Department of Food and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, invites applications for 2 positions of
PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN FOOD SCIENCE
starting on 1st of March 2017 or at a mutual agreement.
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.
The duties of the professor/associate professor/assistant professor will include scientific research, teaching based on it and participation in international collaboration and community engagement in the field. In addition to teaching lectures and courses, the professor/associate professor/ assistant professor will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and participate in the development of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as the documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.
An appointee to an associate/assistant professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications, teaching experience and pedagogical training as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and elected positions in Finnish and international organizations.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors/associate/assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.
The professor’s salary will be based on levels 8−9, and the associate/assistant professor’s on level 7, of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
