Environmental Genomics PostDoc Position @ UFZ | Geramany

Environmental Genomics PostDoc Position @ UFZ | Geramany: The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

Environmental Genomics PostDoc Position @ UFZ | Geramany

The Biodiversity Exploratories (http://www.biodiversity-exploratories.de) are a German Science Foundation funded research project (DFG Priority Program 1374). The three Exploratories serve as open research platform for about 40 biodiversity and ecosystem research groups of Germany and partner countries with the following objectives.

  • the understanding of the relationship between biodiversity of different taxa and levels
  • the role of land use and management for biodiversity and
  • the role of biodiversity for ecosystem processes

Within the Biodiversity Exploratories, the UFZ Department of Soil Ecology and its Environmental Genomics Group are in charge of the “Core Project 8 project: Microorganisms”. As core project our mission is on the one hand to coordinate soil sampling and nuclei acid extraction in cooperation with further contributing projects. These extracts are used in next generation sequencing based analysis of soil microbial communities along land use gradients across time and space by different contributing projects. On the other hand, core 8 also has the task to analyze fungal communities across the experimental plots and in the frame of specific experiments realized on selected experimental plots or regions of the Exploratories.

  • Analysis of temporal and spatial patterns of soil fungal communities along land-use intensity and management levels.
  • Synthesis of the long-term effect of land-use intensity on soil fungal communities and their temporal and spatial co-occurrence patterns with other soil microbiota and above ground plant communities in time and space
