The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences (http://www.helsinki.fi/bio) represents the field of biological and environmental sciences at the University of Helsinki. The Faculty is responsible for research in the field and educates experts to meet the needs of universities, research institutes, government, schools and the business sector.

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences consists of the Division of Environmental Ecology in Lahti as well as the Division of Aquatic Sciences and the Division of Environmental Change and Policy in Helsinki. The Division of Environmental Ecology is part of the Lahti University Campus (http://www.lahdenyliopistokampus.fi/en). The Department is a major Finnish academic unit of environmental research and teaching. The Department’s success is based on the multidisciplinarity, scope and diversity of the activities, related opportunities to develop research and education, as well as the good job prospects of Master’s and doctoral graduates.

The Lahti-based Division of Environmental Ecology has developed into a high-level and internationally distinguished unit of environmental research and education, which has good relations with the wider community and the business sector, particularly in the Lahti economic region. The Division’s research focuses on the ecological and biogeochemical impact of chemicalisation and municipal waste streams as well as the resolution of resulting problems through environmental biotechnology in the urban environment and in the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems within its bounds.

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (Environmental Sciences Job | Professor Position @ Helsinki)

The field of the position is aquatic ecotoxicology in the urban environment.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.

The duties of the professor/associate professor/assistant professor will include scientific research, teaching based on it and participation in international collaboration and community engagement in the field. In addition to teaching lectures and courses, the professor/associate professor/ assistant professor will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and participate in the development of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as the documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.

An appointee to an associate/assistant professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications, teaching experience and pedagogical training as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and elected positions in Finnish and international organisations.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors/associate/assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.

The professor’s salary will be based on levels 8−9, and the associate/assistant professor’s on level 7, of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
