Exciting Virology PhD Student Job Opportunity @ Ghent University Belgium

Job description

The laboratory of Immunology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University (Merelbeke) is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic final year Master student (or recently graduated) in one of the above specified disciplines to join our research team and carry out his/her PhD research from August/September 2017 onwards in the context of an already accepted and granted research project. Our research team focuses on unraveling the molecular interactions between alphaherpesviruses and the immune response, more particularly the innate immune response including Natural Killer (NK) cells and plasmacytoid dendritic cells(pDC)(e.g. Grauwet et al., 2014, PNAS, Grauwet et al., 2016, J Virol, Lamote et al., 2017, J Virol).

Alphaherpesviruses are highly successful pathogens, causing lifelong infections of their host. These viruses have developed a delicate and sophisticated balance with the immune system of their host. A well-functioning, mature immune system is typically able to control herpesviruses sufficiently (without being able to entirely clear the infection), so that the virus does not give rise to life-threatening disease symptoms. However, disturbance of this delicate balance between virus and immune system may have serious and even fatal consequences, e.g. herpes simplex encephalitis. One important element in this balance are NK cells, which are able to recognise and eliminate virus-infected cells. Deficiencies in NK cell activity are associated with aggravated herpesvirus disease, including herpes simplex encephalitis. The interaction between alphaherpesviruses and NK cells forms the central theme of the current Ph.D. position. The general aim of the thesis will be to gather new insights in the biology of NK cells, how they are able to recognize alphaherpesviruses, and which mechanisms alphaherpesviruses have developed to suppress NK cell activity.
