The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization at Göttingen, Germany, is an international research institute. It performs both experimental and theoretical fundamental scientific research and currently employs about 280 people.

For the newly established independent research group of Dr. Armita Nourmohammad we seek to fill a postdoctoral position in Immune-Pathogen Coevolution.

We are looking for excellent, highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join this research group.

The project

Similar to the evolution of organisms adapting to their environment, rapid evolution of cellular populations occurs within our bodies, as the adaptive immune system works to eliminate infections. Chronic pathogens, such as HIV, are able to persist in a host for extended periods of time, during which they also evolve to evade the immune response. Our goal is to characterize the mode and tempo of somatic coevolution of the adaptive immune repertoire together with chronically infecting pathogens, within individuals. This project requires development of inference techniques for out-of-equilibrium coevolutionary processes, and application of such methods to molecular sequence data of antibodies and pathogens collected over time from individuals. This data is often a highly under-sampled representation of the underlying distributions. Statistical inference is necessary to characterize the evolutionary dynamics based on such incomplete information. The goal is to identify the molecular signatures of coevolution, and ultimately, to predict the fate of an antibody or a viral sequence, dependent on the accumulated information of their interacting evolutionary histories.

The position and our offer
The Postdoctoral position is limited to two years with the possibility of extension. Earliest starting date is November 1, 2017. Salary is in accordance with the German state public service salary scale (E13 TVöD-Bund) and the accordant social benefits.

Your profile

The Postdoctoral candidate should hold a PhD degree with a background in statistical / theoretical physics, applied mathematics, mathematical biology, population genetics, or a related field, and preferably (but not required) familiarity with genomic data analysis. Fluency in English is a requirement.
