Senator Jackson had a long-standing commitment to military medicine and health.

The Armed Forces Research Institute for Medical Sciences (AFRIMS) Research Laboratory in Bangkok, Thailand is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, to be based at the Department of Retrovirology in the Cellular Immunology Group. The laboratory under the direction of Dr. Alexandra Schuetz is focusing to understand mucosal immunity and pathogenesis of HIV and SIV infection in the context of vaccine studies and acute HIV/SIV infection (http://www.hivresearch.org/our-scientists/schuetz). The incumbent will support clinical trials in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to AFRIMS.

Responsibilities:

  • Is passionate about science and wants to have an impact on preventing and treating human HIV-1 infection.
  • Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments.
  • Designs, performs, and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance.
  • Performs most research assignments independently with instructions as to the general results expected, and is willing to fit into a team of highly qualified research technicians.
  • Works collaboratively with co-investigators of the funded research grants.
  • Possesses good written and oral communication skills in English, and enjoys data analysis for scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and presentation of data at local and international scientific meetings.
  • Performs a broad spectrum of immunological, cell biology and molecular laboratory techniques, and is willing to adopt new assays and technologies as needed for his/her research projects.
  • Performs sophisticated data analysis and presentation, using software suites such as Prism and FlowJo. Knowledge of Pestle and Spice software is desirable and is verse or interested in learing in Cell Sorting Techniqies.
  • Is willing to provide instruction and training to other staff members in areas of expertise.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficient in FlowJo and other Flowcytometry related software, as well as Microsoft office and scientific graphing software; able to follow and develop standard laboratory procedures and has good verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: PhD in Biology, Immunology or related disciplines

Minimum Experience: 0-2 years

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing or sitting; handling of bio­hazardous materials (e.g. HIV, SIV) and Non Human Primate samples and occasional work on evenings and weekends.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Supervises technical staff

Work Environment: Laboratory Setting
