Job description

Rosin, a major source of resin acids, is a compound that is secreted by coniferous trees at the site of mechanical injury as a natural protection mechanism against infection. In Nordic countries, folk medicine has used rosin to heal infected wounds for centuries and the same effects have recently been proven by scientific research. The effect of rosin consumption is still largely unknown. A product based on resin acids can have value to promote gut health and has been shown to be antibacterial and to improve animal performance.

The goal of this project is to elucidate the actual mode of action of resin acids in improving intestinal health in broiler chickens. This can be due to

(1) decreased colonization by pathogenic micro-organisms,

(2) steering the microbiota composition towards one that is beneficial by producing gut health-promoting substances (such as butyrate),

(3) direct or indirect anti-inflammatory effects and

(4) an improved epithelial barrier. The researcher (MSc or PhD) is expected to develop his own research plan, within the scope of the described project, under the guidance of the promotors. This will involve both in vitro and in vivo experiments.
What do we offer?
