Mass Spectrometry & Biochemistry Specialist Position @ Max Planck Germany

The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried (near Munich, Germany) is a leading international research facility in the field of biochemistry, cell and structure biology and biomedical research and, with around 35 scientific Departments and Research Groups and 850 employees in total, ranks among the largest Institutes of the Max Planck Society. We are looking for a Mass Spectrometry Specialist.

Our research
The “Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction” led by Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann develops and applies methods of mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics in a variety of biological areas. The department is a leader in the field and covers all of its aspects, starting from methods development to basic biology and clinical applications. Our group has a long history of technological innovations in mass spectrometry and has an excellent network in this field.

The successful candidate will significantly contribute to the development of next generation LC-MS technology and its application in clinical proteomics. We are looking for a candidate with strong technical, engineering and analytical skills that will thrive in an ambitious, supportive and extremely multi-disciplinary environment.

We are offering a Mass Spectrometry Specialist position in MS-based proteomics at an engineer or post-doctoral level. The successful candidate is expected to work in a team of two to provide LC-MS equipment support and expertise, and participate actively in the technological development of our platform. The department has more than ten latest generation MS instruments (Orbitrap and time-of-flight) and our aim is to use them in a 24-7 mode.

Your tasks

  • coordination of weekly MS and HPLC instrument maintenance procedures, including instrument calibration and measurements of quality control standards
  • responsibility for the evaluation of MS and HPLC performance and provide recommendations directly to the end-users; ideally, you will implement software and documentation for automated performance assessment
instruction and advising of departmental staff (PhD students and postdocs) in the use and troubleshooting of these systems and coordination of their use
  • in the case of instrument malfunctions, responsibility for troubleshooting, cleaning procedures and repairs (order, exchange of electronic boards and mechanical parts)
maximization of the instrument up-time by analyzing technical problems and recommending modifications to eliminate future issues
  • advancement in the development of a highly robust and streamlined pipeline for proteomics measurements which can also be used in a clinical context
  • contribute towards widening the application of our technological platform to other -omics areas, in particular metabolomics
  • involvement in the optimization and evaluation of new MS and HPLC systems through collaboration with manufacturers

Profile

  • Master of Science or PhD degree in sciences or engineering with fluent English skills
experience and training in the area of advanced MS-based proteomics or other MS-based -omics technologies will be regarded as an advantage
  • prior experience with technical or engineering support in MS-based techniques and instrumentation is not required, but will be regarded as a distinct advantage
  • detailed knowledge and knowhow about repairing, maintaining and troubleshooting Orbitrap and/or quadrupole time-of-flight MS instrumentation will be likewise advantageous
  • open-minded and enthusiastic team-player, with strong commitment and work ethic, keen to work in a multi-disciplinary and international environment, with a willingness to support multiple projects and interact with scientists
