  • To design and synthesise molecules to support drug discovery and development programmes
  • To contribute flexibly to the efficient organization and running of the department

Main Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate excellence in theoretical and practical synthetic chemistry to design and synthesise target molecules for drug discovery programmes with high
  • levels of independence, problem solving and productivity
  • Integrate and analyse structure-activity relationships to iteratively improve physicochemical, ADMET and pharmacological properties, and deliver safe and efficacious novel molecules for innovative biological targets
  • Utilise appropriate analytical techniques to interpret compound structure (NMR, HPLC, Mass Spec, etc.).
  • Ensure timely delivery of target molecules and programme objectives
  • Present own work at project and/or team meetings, or on behalf of others, when required
  • Write and contribute to publications and patents as required
  • Ensure safe working practices in the laboratory for self and others
  • Share scientific knowledge/literature to resolve research problems within the project team
  • Report with precision all results in an appropriate electronic notebook and write scientific reports as required
  • Provide flexible support to the scientific and operational needs of the department; be willing to develop new skills and assume responsibility for specific tasks

  • Demonstrable expertise in the theoretical and practical aspects of synthetic and medicinal chemistry with a successful track record in organic and medicinal chemistry as demonstrated via publications/patent applications
  • Strong practical skills in compound purification and spectroscopy (HPLC, mass spec and NMR etc.)
  • Experience in delivering complex target molecules using multi-step organic syntheses
  • Experience with automatic purification equipment, HPLC (analytical or preparative), microwave reactors and parallel synthesis
  • Good or in-depth knowledge of several scientific areas of drug discovery and interdisclinary knowledge
  • Dynamic personality with a passion for innovation and problem-solving
  • Excellent effective communication, collaboration and team-working skills
  • Ability to adapt to new priorities/emerging data
  • Ability to influence the programme and/or the medicinal chemistry strategy
  • Capacity to work in inter-disciplinary teams

The following skills would be advantageous:

  • Strong track record of Medicinal Chemistry achievements and sustained record of identifying and resolving project issues
  • Experience in use of computational tools for example to delineate structure-activity relationships
  • Experience in scale-up chemistry to 20L scale
  • Detailed knowledge of advanced spectroscopic and analytical methods
  • Familiarity with state of the art laboratory equipment
  • Experience of managing external collaborations and able to critically review scientific opportunities
  • Experience of peer reviewing projects within a specific therapeutic area
  • Education Ph.D. degree in the area of synthetic or medicinal chemistry, or B.Sc./M.Sc. degree with equivalent experience
