Microbiology & Molecular Biology PhD Position @ Basel University Switzerland

We are looking for candidates for a PhD position in a project collaboration between the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Basel and the Institute of Infectious Diseases, University of Bern (work place: Bern).

Description:

A PhD student position is available in a project collaboration between the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Basel and the Institute of Infectious Diseases (IFIK; University of Bern) to investigate multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., ESBL and carbapenemase producers) colonizing the intestinal tract of humans and contaminating
the food chain.

Skills requested:

The student must be enthusiastic for research in the field of antibiotic resistant bacteria and next- generation sequencing technologies. A broad panel of classic and advanced molecular techniques, as well as standard phenotypic susceptibility tests, will implemented during the project. Therefore, candidates with a background in microbiology (more specifically in bacteriology) and molecular biology are well qualified. The student must fulfill the requirements to be accepted as a PhD student by the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern.

This PhD position provides an international working atmosphere with regular seminars in English language and offers the most modern laboratory equipment and a multidisciplinary setting. Results of research will be presented by the PhD student at international meetings. The student will be enrolled in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern (www.gcb.unibe.ch). Salary will be according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Percentage of salary: 100%
Starting date: September 1, 2017
Duration: 36 months
