The Molecular Pathology group of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Cell Biology & Histology at the University of Antwerp is a highly dynamic team focusing on preclinical animal models related to infection, inflammation and neurodegeneration. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Medical Microbiology, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute also at the University of Antwerp, the team is investigating host factors in infections such as pneumonia following a multidisciplinary and multi-omics approach.

Job description

  • We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral student to elucidate host factors in wild type and humanized mouse models of bacterial pneumonia.
  • The candidate would contribute to the pathological and molecular characterization of NSG-CD34 humanized pneumonia models focusing on P. aeruginosa and MRSA, utilizing immunohistopathological techniques, cell culture, qRT-PCR, protein chemistry (WB, Elisa, Luminex), confocal microscopy and flow cytometric techniques.
  • The candidate will participate in the execution of these experiments, the analysis, presentation of the research results and preparation of manuscripts.

Profile and requirements

  • a master degree in Medicine, Bioengineering, Biomedical sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmacy or equivalent. Students in the final year of their degree can also apply;
  • an outstanding academic track record;
  • certified to work with laboratory animals;
  • fluent in written and spoken English and good communication skills.

We offer

  • a full-time doctoral scholarship for a period of one year that will be prolonged by three years after positive evaluation;
  • a multi-disciplinary and international work environment with a state-of-the-art research infrastructure;
  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.324,20 – € 2.469,08.
