Job Description

As a Sr. Scientist for the Laboratory of Neuronal Cell Biology (LNCB), he or she will be:

  • Responsible for converting new science into new targets, drug discovery programs, and technology programs for the Biogen portfolio with an emphasis on neurological disease.
  • Accountable for building and advancing new neurobiology within a group of dedicated postdoctoral fellows and technicians.
  • Contributes to developing and executing research strategies to deliver against Biogen’s objectives to engage in quality science that leads to a deeper understanding of targets and enables the research imperative of “choose the right targets”.
  • Supports the Head of R&D (who also serves as Director for the LNCB) in defining basic and applied biology, molecular pharmacology, cellular biology, and in vivo neurobiological programs that augment the Biogen portfolio.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the LNCB providing support and direction to the postdoctoral fellows and technician(s) in the lab.
  • Accountable for people agenda in the LNCB including colleague development, reward and recognition, recruitment and retention, and communication.
  • Builds external recognition for team through high impact publications.


  • Single point of accountability for the functioning and delivery of the LNCB for projects assigned to his/her team. Able to ensure the lab can optimally utilize the resources available.
  • Models expectations of quality, innovative science applied to discovering new medicines, and of effective people leadership and talent development.
  • Builds cross-functional projects that cut across disciplines, including chemical biology, molecular and cell biology, cellular screening, and in vivo pharmacology.
  • Engages the external environment through thought leadership and visible and active engagement with key opinion leaders, funding bodies, professional societies, and academic institutions and publishing of scientific work
  • Partners with Biogen research leaders in the development of key talent within and across the Biogen laboratories.
  • Able to effectively identify and advance breakthrough science.
  • Consistently converts new science into new targets, drug discovery programs, and technology platforms for the Biogen portfolio.
  • Able to maximize the value from an academic-style lab group in the midst of the discovery organization, aligned with therapeutic interests, but empowered to explore new biology through access to technologies and collaborations with existing groups.
  • Works closely with individuals across Biogen Research Laboratories
  • Manage, create, and leverage technologies to prosecute state-of-the-art research on novel pathways and targets.
  • Effectively communicate proposed and completed research through presentations and publications both internally and externally.
  • Lead and support research platforms in primary neuron culture, brain slices preparations, and in vivo rodent models.
  • Connects LNCB science to Biogen platforms in structural biology, medicinal chemistry, screening, genetics, computational modeling, bioinformatics, veterinary sciences, pharmacokinetics/metabolism, and protein engineering.
  • Ensure team access to reagents, data analysis, and technical resources across Biogen Research.
  • Drives scientific excellence on projects that transform drug discovery efforts in the Biogen portfolio; ensures high impact publications.
  • In addition to responsibilities over the LNCB, the Sr. Scientist will be responsible for building target class platforms that support discovery programs across the Biogen portfolio and particularly for neurodegenerative diseases. Target class platforms refer to broad classes of receptors, enzymes, or related macromolecules for which all necessary reagents, assays, screening systems, quantitative read-outs, and in vivo models are elaborated in a highly scaled and industrialized fashion. Examples include GPCRs, serine hydrolases, transporters, etc.
  • The Sr. Scientist will further assume broad responsibility for new target identification that supports new programs that enter in the Biogen portfolio, and contributes to a sustainable pipeline of first-in-class programs. New targets will be rooted firmly in human biology and human genetics, and he/she will leverage ongoing work by postdoctoral fellows and others within the LNCB to provide 10-15% of the new targets pursued by Biogen.

  • Working knowledge of drug discovery and experience of leadership of a small team.

Education: Relevant PhD or MD/PhD, minimum of 5 years of experience after postdoc training leading a research group in industry or academia.
