PhD BioChemical Systems Job @ KU Leuven Belgium

PhD BioChemical Systems Job @ KU Leuven Belgium. The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Dutch pronunciation: [katoˈlikə univɛrsiˈtɛit ˈløːvə(n)], About this sound listen (help·info); Dutch for Catholic University of Leuven, but usually not translated into English to avoid confusion with the Catholic University of Leuven (1834–1968)), also known as KU Leuven or University of Leuven, is a Dutch-speaking university in Leuven, Flanders, Belgium.

The University of Leuven was founded at the centre of the historic town of Leuven in 1425, making it Belgium’s first university. After being closed in 1797 during the Napoleonic period, the Catholic University of Leuven was “re-founded” in 1834, and is frequently, but controversially, identified as a continuation of the older institution.A In 1968 the Catholic University of Leuven split into the Dutch-language Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the French-language Université catholique de Louvain, which moved to Louvain-la-Neuve in Wallonia. Since the fifteenth century, Louvain, as it is still often called, has been a major contributor to the development of Catholic theology. It is considered the oldest Catholic university still in existence.

PhD Student in Estimation and Control of Cell Populations

We are looking for a motivated student with a background in chemical or biosystems engineering and an interest in the modelling and computational analysis of heterogeneity in cell populations to join the Bio- & Chemical Systems Technology, Reactor Engineering and Safety Section at the Department of Chemical Engineering. The student will work as a PhD student in the group Computational Methodologies for (Bio-)chemical Processes under the supervision of Prof. dr. Steffen Waldherr.
In general, the research of the section is aimed at the exploitation, optimization and control of chemical and biochemical processes in selected, industrially relevant target areas.

Project:

State estimation and control methods for heterogeneous cell populations
Recent experimental advances to observe single cell dynamics have increasingly highlighted the role of heterogeneity among cells in biosystems and biomedical engineering. Such heterogeneity is commonly described by a cell number density function over the state space of individual cells, giving rise to so called population balance equations. The focus of this project is on estimation and control methods in the context of heterogeneous population models, in particular such models that can be described by population balance equations. State estimation based on lower dimensional population snapshots will be implemented via particle filters, and control methods based on numerical optimization or moment methods.

Profile

  • Master’s degree with a background in bioprocess engineering and scientific computing, with strong overall marks (a minimum level of ‘distinction’)
  • Previous experience with cell population balance models and state estimation / control methods is desirable
  • Very good English (written and verbal communication) for scientific interactions required
  • Strong motivation and willingness to work at interdisciplinary boundaries

Offer

The successful candidate will be offered a PhD fellowship to become part of our international team with global research links to work towards a PhD. The initial contract will be for one year, and can be prolonged for up to 4 years total. Besides working on the research project, the candidate will also support the educational activities at the department.
