Job description:

Biodiversity loss is a major societal issue. Amphibians are the vertebrate class most severely affected by the current sixth mass extinction event with nearly one third of all 7321 known species considered to be threatened. One of the most remarkable threats to amphibian diversity is the fungal cutaneous disease chytridiomycosis, which is caused by the chytrid fungi Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and B. salamandrivorans (Bs). A globalized hypervirulent lineage of Bd has caused the rapid decline or extinction of at least an estimated 200 amphibian species in southern Europe, Australia and the Americas. Urgent measures are necessary to mitigate the impact of the fungal amphibian skin disease chytridiomycosis. In this multidisciplinary project, we aim at mitigating an amphibian pandemic by embedding biodiversity conservation in contaminant exposed agricultural landscapes.
More specifically, this research project aims to investigate the impact of agricultural contaminants in amphibian breeding waters on the dynamics and anti-Bs/Bd activity of aquatic micropredator communities. Dynamics of agricultural contaminants in amphibian breeding waters will be correlated over a three year period with the composition, abundance, dynamics and anti-Bs/Bd activity of aquatic micropredator communities in natural and agricultural landscapes. Causative relationships between contaminant and micropredator community dynamics will be established in mesocosm set-ups. State-of-the-art techniques will be used such as targeted and non-targeted mass spectrometric approaches for analysis of agricultural contaminants in ponds (residues of veterinary drugs, feed additives, pesticides, mycotoxins using LC-MS/MS and HRMS), metagenomics and qPCR. The start date is October, 1 2016. The position is funded initially for one year and, after positive evaluation, can be prolonged for 3 more years.

Profile of the candidate:

The candidate we are looking for has a strong motivation to conduct research, and can function as part of a team since this project is part of a larger concerted research action (GOA) funded by Ghent University. The chytrid research group of prof. Pasmans (Department of Pathology, Bacteriology and Avian diseases) comprises 4 postdoctoral researchers and 5 PhD students. The group of prof. Croubels (Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Biochemistry) has extensive expertise in residue analysis of veterinary drugs, additives and contaminants such as mycotoxins in feed and water, and in samples from animal origin. The research unit of prof. Goethals (Department of Applied Ecology and Environmental Biology) has a profound expertise in data analysis and modeling tools for characterization of pond ecosystems.
