Pending approval of external funding Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Excitation dynamics of nanoscale systems” in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG). The position commences on the earliest possible date in 2016. It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 19.5* work hours per week.
The fixed-term nature of this contract is based upon Section 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Labor Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed to 31 October 2017.

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties:

An opportunity currently exists, for a PhD position at the University of Hamburg in the group of Prof. Bester: Theory of nanoscopic systems. The successful applicant will join a research project concerned with the development of numerical methods for electronic structure calculations for systems consisting of 100.000 atoms. The research focus will be the development and application of excited-state methods for the calculation of the optical properties (excitonic effects) for extended systems. The candidate will apply very recent developments, building upon codes written in the group, based on a combination of ab-initio DFT and screened configuration interaction.
Application areas will include defects in semiconductors (e.g. NV-centers), and novel 2D systems. The newly established group is associated with the physics as well as the chemistry departments of the university and has strong ties to the Excellence Cluster Center of Ultrafast Imaging (CUI) hosting leading experimental groups on photon science (DESY campus).

A candidate experienced with one or more of the following topics will be given priority:
• Defects in semiconductors
• Programming
* Full-time positions currently comprise 39 hours per week.


A university degree in a relevant field. We expect a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry or related disciplines, preferably in the fields of theoretical condensed matter research or quantum chemistry.
