The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam invites applications for a PhD Studentship (code 05/17).

Our research

Plants respond to environmental stress by activating transcription factors (TF) that control diverse gene regulatory networks. One of the TFs we study is NAC transcription factor ATAF1 from Arabidopsis thaliana, a carbon starvation-induced regulator. Carbon starvation in plants occurs under different stress conditions and understanding how plants respond to it bears great potential for improving the growth and yield of crops. We found that ATAF1 plays a key role in various biological processes that involve the mobilization of carbon from stressed cells and organs to sustain plant growth and development.

The aim of the project is to unravel the mechanistic code that activates ATAF1 expression in different tissues and through which ATAF1 exerts its regulatory functions. The research involves a wide spectrum of molecular-biological and biochemical techniques (e.g., yeast 1- and 2-hybrid, ChIPseq, RNAseq, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, co-immunoprecipitation, BiFC) and addresses questions at the levels of physiology and development.
