Postdoctoral Organic Chemistry Jobs @ UCL | UK

Postdoctoral Organic Chemistry Jobs @ UCL | UK. Established in 1826 as London University by founders inspired by the radical ideas of Jeremy Bentham, UCL was the first university institution to be established in London, and the first in England to be entirely secular and to admit students regardless of their religion. UCL makes the disputed claims of being the third-oldest university in England and the first to admit women on equal terms with men. UCL became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London in 1836, which was granted a royal charter that year. It has grown through mergers, including with the Institute of Neurology (in 1997), the Royal Free Hospital Medical School (in 1998), the Eastman Dental Institute (in 1999), the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (in 1999), the School of Pharmacy (in 2012) and the Institute of Education (in 2014).

Postdoctoral Organic Chemistry Jobs @ UCL | UK

Research Associate in Organic Chemistry
Grade: 7

Hours: Full-time

Salary (inclusive of London allowance): £33,686 – £40,716 per annum

Closing Date: 6th August 2016

Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will work with Dr Jon Wilden in the Department of Chemistry at the Bloomsbury Campus of University College London. This EPSRC funded project is available working in the field of transition-metal-free organic synthesis, sustainable chemistry and electroorganic synthesis. The project aims to examine and define the underlying reaction mechanisms of known pathways and to use the acquired knowledge to develop new synthetic strategies that can compete with known transition metal mediated reactions. The project also aims to use electrical current to effect transformations that otherwise might employ transition metal catalysts.

The postholder will be required to design, synthesise and characterize small molecule organic compounds and to study the mechanistic steps in their formation. The project will make extensive use of modern synthetic approaches as well as a variety of modern spectroscopic techniques.

The post is funded by the EPSRC for 21 months initially, and is available from 1st September 2016.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in Organic Chemistry (or be about to be awarded a PhD), and possess experience in the following areas: organic synthesis, compound purification and characterisation, NMR spectroscopy, electron transfer processes, electroorganic chemistry.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6 (salary £29,485 – £31,091 per annum, including London Allowance of £2,948 p.a.) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
