DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the PI, incumbent will conduct study of prion diseases with molecular and cellular methods, including transgenic mice. Perform a wide variety of molecular biology, biochemical, and tissue culture techniques using in vivo and in vitro model systems to aid in the study of prion pathogenesis. Incumbent will be responsible for performing techniques, including DNA cloning, preparing viral vectors, PCR, westerns, ELISAs, and immunohistochemistry. Participate in animal studies including maintaining a mouse colony. Also, responsible for inventory, ordering lab supplies, and regulatory compliance administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as typically acquired by a Bachelor’s Degree in biochemistry, structural biology, general chemistry, cellular and/or molecular biology and/or applicable work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and monitor small laboratory animals. Demonstrated knowledge to administer medications, euthanize small laboratory animals, collect tissues at necropsy and trim tissues for histological analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, ELISA, and tissue culture protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of protein analysis techniques: western blot.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform DNA cloning and prepare viral vectors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the proper use and maintenance of laboratory equipment (i.e. high speed centrifuges, pH meter, spectrophotometric equipment, electrophoresis, PCR apparatus, etc.).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including experience with word processing, spreadsheet, data management, presentation, and internet-based software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience writing IACUC and IRB protocols or sections.
    SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Willing to work with hazardous materials (biological, chemical, and radioactive) and animals.
  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as experimental protocols demand.
