Proteomics Job | Deputy Head Position @ CeMM, Austria
Deputy Head Proteomic and Metabolomic Facility
Closing date for applications: 15 August 2016
CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is an international, independent and interdisciplinary research institution located at the Campus of the Vienna General Hospital and Medical University of Vienna. Driven by medical needs and through a molecular appreciation of diseases, CeMM integrates basic research and clinical expertise to pursue innovative diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic approaches. Research is focused on inflammation, immune disorders, cancer and metabolic diseases.
We are seeking a DEPUTY HEAD
(and a number of highly-motivated technical individuals)
to join our PROTEOMIC and METABOLOMIC FACILITY at CeMM
(Code: DH MS 2016)
Together with the Head and the Scientific Director of CeMM, the Deputy Head will be responsible for the coordination and advancement of the Proteomic and Metabolomic Facility at CeMM. Proteomics is well-established and routine but in addition, it is our goal to integrate a metabolomic component that will be fully-operational within the next 18 months.
About the Institute
We are a group of 130 scientists from 39 nations situated in a beautiful, bright and perfectly designed building (inaugurated in 2011). We have state-of-the-art technologies and are neighbours with one of the largest research hospitals in Europe. Vienna is a fascinating capital city, with world-leading quality of life, and legendary music and culture. CeMM has been voted best place to work in academia in a 2012 survey of The Scientist, is an equal opportunity employer, and our official working language at CeMM is English.
CeMM has an established internationally-recognised track record in:
(i) systems biology/network interactomics;
(ii) pathogen interactomics;
(iii) chemical proteomics; and
(iv) chemical biology screening as evidenced by many publications in high-ranking international journals such as Nature and Cell.
In addition, the experience and knowledge of the Principal Investigators at CeMM is exceptional in posing fundamental biological questions and application of these questions in a medically relevant setting. Within our short institute life, and based on our super-cooperative research model and –omic technologies, we have identified the missing cancer gene in myeloproliferative neoplasms (Klampfl et al NEJM 2013), a new cancer pathway with a new drug (Huber et al. Nature 2014), and the molecular basis for acute macular degeneration (Weissmann et al Nature 2011).
The mass spectrometry laboratory space was designed to the highest standards when the group relocated to the new CeMM building on the medical campus. To operate under optimal conditions in an analytical-suitable environment, each machine resides in individual cubicles that are maintained at constant temperature and humidity. Minimal downtime is assured via remote surveillance whereby the performance of the systems can be consistently monitored.
Requirements/Qualification of the Candidate (Proteomics Job | Deputy Head Position @ CeMM, Austria)
The successful Deputy Head should have an excellent background in analytical techniques such as HPLC and/or GC and mass spectrometry and/or strong computational biology skills. The main duties include the operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art LCMS instrumentation, implementation and improvement of methodologies/technologies and active engagement in scientific projects at CeMM. Additionally, a basic understanding of protein chemistry and/or biochemistry would be highly desirable.
The successful candidate will interact with CeMM scientists and external clients to discuss new projects and services, ensure the laboratory and instruments run smoothly at all times, interact with mass spectrometry and other equipment vendors, and design technology development projects. Part of the duties is also to supervise the team operating the Proteomic and Metabolomic Facility. Project management, administration and reporting are an essential part of the duties, including a close interaction with the accounting department to document and generate internal and external invoices.
The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. and a background in proteomics, metabolomics, chemoinformatics or computational biology. Relevant experience in at least one of these disciplines is required. The candidate should also have experience in project management and directing staff, be exceptionally well-organised, efficient, and have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Application Details (Proteomics Job | Deputy Head Position @ CeMM, Austria)
Applications should be in English and contain a cover letter, CV, publication list, funding track record, names and contact details of three references. Please summarize in one paragraph what you believe is your single greatest research or technical development achievement to date and why.
Please send all documents with the code “DH MS 2016” to firstname.lastname@example.org
Application Deadline: 15 August 2016
We are looking for scientists that are either seeking their first independent appointment or are already at a consolidation stage. The successful candidate should have an exceptional level of energy and drive to apply their expertise and knowledge to a clinical setting in a stimulating research environment. Salary and conditions are commensurate with experience.
