The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is one of four schools in the Faculty of Sciences. The school is located at the University’s Waite campus, the pre-eminent plant and agricultural science research site in the Southern Hemisphere. A number of academic courses are taught through the school in areas including: agriculture, viticulture and oenology, food and nutrition science, and plant biotechnology. The school represents a world-class concentration of scientific researchers, educators and infrastructure.
The Biometry Hub is a statistics research, consulting and education group at Waite, within the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine. Researchers in the group have recently been awarded funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) to set up the southern node of the foundational GRDC initiative – Statistics for the Australian Grains Industry (SAGI). The project will increase the statistical capacity in the southern growing region of Australia with an objective of strengthening research outcomes of regionally based GRDC funded projects. The project will strengthen the adoption of sound statistical methods to greatly improve research outcomes and increase confidence in new technologies including superior varietal selection, leading to increased sustainability and profitability of grain growers. There are strong collaboration links to similar groups in other regions in Australia. The Biometry Hub provides a unique inclusive collegial environment, enabling and encouraging everyone to develop their full potential and supporting group members with mentorship, professional development opportunities and on job training.

We are seeking an enthusiastic researcher interested in a career in statistical genetics to work under the research supervision of Dr Julian Taylor on developing new statistical methods in QTL analysis and providing statistical research support into national GRDC projects. There may be provision for research opportunities in plant breeding outside the grains.

Salary: Level A, $80,881 per annum.
Superannuation: An employer contribution of 17% may apply.
Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately until 30 June 2019.

Position requirements
To be successful you should have:

  • A PhD (or near completion) in statistics, mathematics or computer science with a strong focus on statistical genetics or numeric methods
  • Advanced understanding of linear mixed models
  • Ability to develop and implement new statistical methods
  • Evidence of well-developed computing and programming skills in R
  • Evidence of well-developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Preparedness to work collaboratively with researchers in statistics and non-statistics areas
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under deadlines
